10 Canadian Motorcycle Rides You Won’t Want to Miss
Canada is full of breathtaking scenic destinations that offer a huge variety of landscapes and experiences for every type of motorbiker. Whether it’s through nature, culture, regional food specialties, or history, what better way to get to know and appreciate your own country than to experience it by motorbike?
We’ve rounded up a list of the top ten rides from around the country that are on our great Canadian bucket list (in no particular order).
The Cabot Trail
An iconic road located in northeast Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island, this picturesque 300-km route offers motorcyclists plenty of twists and turns that reveal stunning forest, mountain, and ocean views. Go in the fall to take in the magnificent autumn colour palette.
The Lake Temiskaming Tour
Criss-crossing the highways of northeastern Ontario and Quebec, this circuit can be started from any point along the route. The 440-km loop includes many historical and beautiful stops, including old logging and mining towns, old-growth forests, waterfalls and waterfronts.
The Pacific Rim Highway
Also known as British Columbia’s Highway 4, the twisting two-lane Pacific Rim Highway runs for a total of 161 km and promises majestic coastal forests, beaches with cresting waves, and the smell of salty sea air. Motorcyclists who like to camp and hike will find plenty of options along the route, including at its western terminus in the surfing town of Tofino.
Confederation Bridge
Linking New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island and spanning 12.9 km, the Confederation Bridge is the world’s longest bridge that crosses over ice-covered water. Although it only takes about 10 minutes to cross, the iconic curved bridge provides awesome views of fishing boats and coastlines. Note that the bridge charges a $20 toll for motorcycles to cross.
The Sea to Sky Highway
From Vancouver to Whistler, The Sea to Sky Highway, aka Highway 99, is a gorgeous 2-hour stretch of Pacific Northwest views. On clear days, you can see the mountains reflected in the ocean. Visibility and conditions can be a bit more hazardous on cloudy or foggy days, but the moody colour palette is no less stunning.
The Gander Loop
Newfoundland and Labrador’s legendary Gander Loop, also called the “Road to the Isles,” covers rocky coastlines, rugged landscapes, and spectacular views. The route also offers the opportunity to see icebergs and whales in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Riders can indulge in plenty of fresh seafood along the way, too!
Alberta Highway 55
Some riders take Alberta Highway 55 all the way to Kenora, Ontario, enjoying a long tour that spans the northern prairies and central Canadian landscape. This one is a bit more of a commitment, though, so it’s important to plan around the sparse fuel stops and accommodations and ensure your bike is tuned up and ready to ride in all conditions.
Lake Superior Shore
This epic 1200-km-long ride stretches from Wawa to Sault St. Marie along the shore of Lake Superior (the world’s largest freshwater lake!) in northern Ontario. This route is well-suited to a variety of motorcycling styles, and many hotels along the route even have dedicated motorcycle parking spots.
Icefields Parkway
Situated in the Rocky Mountains, this 400-km route is chock full of mountains and waterfalls and is named for one of the exciting destinations it passes through: the Columbia Icefields. It also offers the opportunity to stop at some of Alberta’s most-visited mountain towns: Lake Louise, Jasper, and Banff.
Haines Highway
For anyone craving a ride on the wilder side, the Haines Highway is the perfect option. The 166-km-long drive follows historical routes used by Klondike Gold Rush prospectors and Chilkat Tlingit traders and showcases remote alpine tundra terrain, forests, and glaciers. It’s quite remote, however, so consider bringing your own fuel – there’s only one fuelling station along the route.
